More teams are needed in SuperLeague and not less.
Anyone who disagrees clearly has an elitist agenda that draws parallels with Adolf Hitlerís failed plans for an elite human race. The regular season has gone by in the blink of an eye when it deserved to be so much longer. Thankfully my team has got into the play-offs but I cannot even begin to imagine what itís going to be like for the fans of other teams that missed out on this end of season battle between the best of Europe.
So itís the final countdown to Old Trafford with the likes of Castleford, Bradford, Salford, Harlequins, Wakefield and Crusaders missing out merely because they couldnít make it into the top eight. I find this very snooty indeed because these teams have provided such a great season for us and itís diabolical that they canít join this ever more confusing end of season festival. Itís a bit like saying to your friend that they can come to all the regular partyís in the year but not the big ones at the end.
If it was my choice everyone in Super League would be allowed in the playoff race at the end of the season just like every rugby team in Europe is allowed in the Challenge Cup. For far too long we have deprived those at the bottom of SuperLeague from having a stake in the end of season SL play-offs which is a different competition all together to the season long (or short in this case) competition where sides compete for the top spot. I do think that we should still have the bias where the best teams come in at the end and get the easiest route to Old Trafford. But why have a top eight play-offs gixed in such a way as make it next to impossible for a team outside the top four to make it to the final, when you can have the wooden spooners of the regular season involved too?
However the biggest injustice of all in the game is the rejection of some applicants vying to be in SuperLeague by the RFL since franchise licensing was introduced. I think itís an absolute disgrace that the ambitions of Halifax, Leigh, Toulouse, Featherstone and Barrow are suppressed by a bunch of pen pushers at Red Hall. To make matters worse the amount of applicants applying for SuperLeague has seen a downturn this this time around. At the rate this is going weíll just see SuperLeague clubs applying to be a part of SuperLeague.
We should be in this together. But it appears that weíre in it for a very few.
