Hanging on to Fifth
Posted by southstander on September 09 2011 - 16:24:21

Finished Fourth
It only seems like two minutes since Millennium Magic and already we're at the end of the regular Superleague season. How time flies.

The last action for the Rhinos before we pass into the play-offs, is to ensure that we secure fifth spot, just behind sundays opponents. A loss could see us end the season in seventh should Hull FC win and Catalan get at least a draw. The nightmare scenario would be a play-off trip to the Dragons, but that is almost mathematically impossible!

We preview the game, read more here...

The Giants already have a win over the Rhinos under their belts for 2011. It was a win which ended fifty-two years of Headingley hurt as they recorded the result which their forefathers, and their forefathers, had not been able to muster for half a century.

On that fateful evening back in April we lost by a catastrophic 06-38 on one of the darkest days in a pretty gloomy season.

For a rare sunday afternoon outing, Big Mac can welcome back Webb, Burrow and Jones-Buchanan but there is still no sign of Watkins and McShane really seems to be out of favour with the gaffer.

There will inevitably be changes in the stating line-up and it's a ptretty strong looking ninteen of; Webb, Smith, Delaney, Hall, McGuire, Burrow, Leuluai, Buderus, Peacock, Jones-Buchanan, Ablett, Sinfield, Lauiti'iti, Bailey, Kirke, Hauraki, Clarkson, Jones-Bishop, and Hardaker.

The Giants have nothing to play for except an unprecedented 'double'. They are fixed in fourth with no scope to move upwards or down and that could mean one of two thing. They will either take their foot off the gas and indulge in some self-preservation ahead of next weekends trip to Wigan or Warrington, or they will play their little hearst out to ensure they take some winning form into the play-offs. I'd bet on the latter.

Keith Mason is in line to make his return from injury but I think it is likely that he's named as a non-playing squad member to get him back in the fold ready for next week. There is no point in risking him in a nothing game. Braown names his nineteen as; Grix, Lawrence, Cudjoe, Gilmour, Brown, Brough, Crabtree, Robinson, Griffin, Fa'alogo, Faiumu, Mason, Raleigh, Patrick, Horne, McGillvary, Sarsfield, Simpson, and Ferguson.

Three Giants to keep an eye on;

Crabtree

Brough

Patrick

The idiot Child is in the middle so I'd expect us to get penalised to death. He could, and probably will, ruin what should be a good, flowing, competitive game. Keep an eye out for a sin-binning or sending off, he loves to get his name in the papers.

Leeds lost at the Galpharm last season by 20-26 after leading at half-time. It was a bit of an away blip as you have to go back to Superleague VIII to find the next previous loss in Huddersfield.

Southstander.com Prediction
Giants 18 32 Rhinos

I think that this is a game that Leeds will win. We'll win because we have to, and we'll win because our hosts will have one eye on next week.

The bookies don't agree, they've given us a four point start on the coupon. I'd definitely be taking that.

The weather looks bad for sunday. There is every chance it will be lashing it down and blowing a gale.

Travel safe and enjoy the game.

Fingers crossed we secure fifth and a home game next weekend.
