Challenge Cup Semi-Finals Previews
Posted by southstander on August 04 2011 - 07:30:37

Just eighty minutes (or may be a little more) stand in the way of progression to the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley for the four teams which enter this weeks semi-finals full of hope.

The bookies favourite is a Rhinos v. Warriors final, but with the seasons first major prize in the offing, this is a weekend when anything could happen.

Saints v. Wigan - Saturday 16:30 - Halliwell Jones Stadium

Warrington plays host to the latest chapters in one of the greatest rivalries in our great game as Wigan and St. Helens do battle in front of what will be a sell-out crowd for the right to run onto the Wembley turf.

Wigan are six points clear of Saints in the league and very few pundits give them much of a chance to progress, but never underestimate the Saints, especially in a local derby.

Wigan have won both meetings so far in 2011 with a 28-24 victory in April backed up by a 32-10 win in June. Wigan are on the back on an eight game winning run, and nine unbeaten against a Saints side who have won five on the bounce.

Saints have been given a six point start on the coupon, which I have a feeling may not quite be enough.

Warriors by 8.

Tigers v. Rhinos - Sunday 15:15 - Keepmoat Stadium

Despite the bookies giving the Tigers a ten point start in the handicapping I think that this one will me much, much closer than that. This won't be a walkover in front of another sell-out crowd at the Keepmoat in Doncaster.

Only a single league point seperates these two in the Superleague XVI table with the Rhinos holding the slight advantage. The two teams have scored almost the same number of points with the Tigers defence proving a little more leaky.

These two have only met once this season, back in April at the Jungle, when the Rhinos smashed the home side by 48-06. You can be certain that it won't be such an emphatic win on Sunday.

The Rhinos will have to take real care with this one, the Tigers will be on a high after knocking out the Giants in the last round, and bristling with confidence that they can do the same to their arch enemies.

The Tigers lost to the Saints last week, possibly with a quarter final hangover being to blame, while the Rhinos are on the back of three consecutive wins.

A full preview of this game will follow tomorrow.

Rhinos by 4.

Both games could be sensational.
