Rhinos Reborn at Odsal
Posted by southstander on April 21 2011 - 22:27:39

In Charge
Two teams in the wrong half of the table. Two sides hammered last week by opposition that they should have beaten. Two sides desperate for a win.

A win for either side over their oldest adversaries could kick-start their season, we had everything crossed that it would be Leeds, but optimism wasn't high.

We bring you all of the action here......

Superleague XVI - Round 11

21st April 2011

Rhinos Reborn at Odsal

Early exchanges were positive from both sides with no dropped ball and just a few silly penalties, mostly for high shots.

On seven the Bulls hit the front when Ah Van rose above Hall to finger tip forward a Herbert kick, head the ball, and then catch it to ground over the Leeds line. Ah Van failed with his own conversion from the touchline but the home side were a confidence boosting 0-4 ahead.

Three minutes later and it got far worse for Leeds. Leeds failed to get enough hands on Lynch and he went over under the sticks making the Ah Van conversion a formality. Leeds had taken ten minutes to fall apart, it was back to how we played last friday night. It seemed like a weeks training had been for nothing.

On fifteen Leeds were pushing towards the Bulls line when Sinfield offloaded. The ball bounced around before Sinfield flicked it to Burrow but inexplicably Alibert gave a Bradford scrum.

Superb
On twenty-five the Rhinos benefitted from Alibert calling the Bulls offside on their own line. Leeds used four tackles to work close before McShane muscled his way over from dummy half to ground on the line. It was an essential Leeds try and just reward for some good pressure over the previous quarter hour. Sinfield added the extras for 6-10.

Now we needed to build on this small success.

On thirty-five we got back level when a McShane break put Jamie Jones-Buchanan over in the corner (perhaps marginally forward). Sinfield slid the ball wide of the post from the touchline and it was 10-10. Leeds were on top and had been dominating the second twenty.

On thirty-eight Cross gave away a stupid penalty when holding the marker after playing the ball. Ah Van accepted the offer to take his side 10-12 up, a lead which they held on to until half-time.

The second half was seven minutes old when Leeds defensive frailties were exposed again, this time thanks to a stupid Hauraki ball steal. This time it was Elima who found the gap and despite crossing on his back he managed to ground the ball. Ah Van missed the kick and the margin was now a converted try at 10-16.

On fifty-one some nice Rhinos passing saw Senior find a gap off a Webb pass to dive over the line. Sinfield added the extras to again level the scores, this time at 16-16. Game on.

Four minutes later and we hit the front, but it cost us Kallum Watkins as he limped off. An Ablett break and offload found Webb who went to twenty before being hauled down. A quick play and Sinfield put a long ball to Ryan Hall who went over in the corner on a massive overlap. Sinfield goaled superbly from the touchline for 22-16.

On the hour mark silly penalties cost Leeds another try. This time it was a Sinfield ball steal which after a few plays saw Elima stretch over to score, injuring himself in the process. Ah Van kicked the extra two and we were back all square at 22-22. It was now a twenty minute game.

Captain Cool

On sixty-six Ah Van pushed JJB off the ball as the Rhino chased a kick. Alibert saw it and gave the Rhinos a penalty which Sinfield accepted to edge the Rhinos into a two point lead.

With three minutes left fast play saw Leeds with a play-the-ball close to the line and Danny Buderus spun over from dummy half to hit the upright before scoring. Sinfield kicked the easiest of the night and the game was in the bag at 30-22.

We got the points and at the end of the day that was all that really mattered. It wasn't particularly pretty, but the defence showed significant signs of improvement and we held onto more ball than we have done in recent games. There was still a basket full of stupid and avoidable penalties but we've got the two points.

Crusaders monday and rumours that Peacock and McGuire may be back in serious contention. Is that light at the end of the tunnel...or the lights of an oncoming train?
