It's a long while since I've actually put my name to an article on SouthStander.com, preferring to contribute through match reports and previews and leaving the comment to Damo and Lawrie. But I felt obliged to break cover and pour scorn on whoever is propogating the rumours relating to the Rhinos standing down Brian McDermott and appointing Brian Noble as head coach. You need your bumps felt!
As you'll know from the match reports I am no fan of Big Mac, in fact, I'd happily put my name to any petition calling for him to be replaced with someone who can bring success back to the club. But the thought of Brian Noble taking the helm at my club turns my stomach.
Gary Hetherington can be credited with much more intelligence than to even consider employing Noble as anything other than a boot cleaner. In the past there has been little love lost between the two, and Noble was embroiled on Bradfords' behalf in the Iestyn Harris debacle. For anyone to associate Leeds with the ex-Bulls supremo is laughable.
Noble has a habit of building sides of out of brutish Australians and focussing on defence to the detriment of any flare and expansionism. This is far from the Rhinos way. What we need is a happy medium between control and the 'suicide' rugby which Big Mac has spent the winter fostering.
As GB coach, Noble was a flop, and in the process he alienated many of our current stars by dropping them, or playing them ridiculously out of position. As a coach he'd go down like a lead balloon.
If Gary really is in the market for a new coach then he could do a lot worse than to go and retrieve Tony Smith from the Wolves, a coach who has proved that he can bring success to any club side that he coaches.
Noble....at Headingley....don't make me laugh. His appointment would see my season ticket rapidly progressing through the shredder.
