The Damo Bit - 2nd February 2011
Posted by southstander on February 02 2011 - 16:44:08

Just eleven days to go until the Rhinos season opener against the old enemy the Bradford Bulls.

Damo loves it when we play the Bulls, but he still blames them for stopping Leeds from making it six-in-a-row rather than the three we actually managed.

As a Rhinos fan, there is no other more joyous feeling in the world than beating the Bulls. In recent years I have seen the men from Headingley rip the boys from Odsal with complete ease. When the Rhinos take on the Bulls, their defence has parted with a speed thatíd make Moses jot notes.

Of course it hasnít always been this way, and I can still remember that all conquering Bulls side in the years preceeding 2003. However, by 2004 The Bulls were a pale shadow of the side that was once regarded as the best team in the country. It was the Rhinos who dominated 2004, and pretty much every year after, in that fine decade. The only way Bradford Bulls could beat us in 2005 was cheating the salary cap which resulted in a Grand Final victory for them.

Iím still convinced to this day that if Bulls hadn't have broken the salary cap, Leeds Rhinos would have gone on to win that 2005 Grand Final and we could of gone on to conquer 2006 also. However this cheating by the Bulls in 2005 left the Rhinos team feeling hard done by and it was telling on the pitch as we had a torrid season in 2006. The Rhinos well and truly picked themselves up by the end of 2007 which resulted in the first of three back-to-back Grand Final victories.

In my eyes, from 2004 to 2009 the Grand Finals should all have been ours. But it wasnít to be and itís all ancient history now. I may have forgiven the Bradford Bulls, but Iíll never forget what was done off the field in 2005. Leeds have gone on to greater things since that year and Iím going to share with you three of those things now in the shape of my favourite three great victories over the Bulls -

6th May 2007

Bradford Bulls 38 - Leeds Rhinos 42

The culmination of seven hours of Millennium Magic rugby saw the Rhinos take on the Bulls in the competition for top spot. Read morehere.

20th March 2008

Leeds Rhinos 44 - Bradford Bulls 2

Two sides ravaged by injury, a gale blowing into the faces of the regulars of the Carnegie Stand, and an almost packed house to watch it. Read more here.

26th June 2009

Leeds Rhinos 33 - Bradford Bulls 20

SKY opted not to carry tonights West Yorkshire derby, a game that would normally have seen the terrible twosome of Eddie and Stevo drooling at the prospect. Read more here.

Finally a big thanks to Paul for doing the match reports over the years and a big thanks to RLPhotos for sending in such stunning images!

So what was your favourite victory over the Bulls?
