If you want to go in an authentic sports pub before and after Rhinos matches this season, then 'The Merry Monk' might just be for you. Itís not too far from the stadium and there are always plenty of Rhinos fans in before and after the games. The atmosphere is as good as you can get it in any of the pubs in nearby Headingley.
One of the best features of this pub, if not the best, is a signed black and white picture of one of the best Leeds teams of all time. It was a squad containing all the 'home' grown stars of the 70's posing with the Challenge Cup Trophy. This picture has been the centre of the attention in this pub ever since it was kindly donated, for all to enjoy, by a pub regular.
If heís around, you might bump into Terry, and he might just bring more personal photos of players from that era down from the flat above the pub. I saw two absolute beauties, one was Terry with John Holmes in the 'Three Legs' and the other was terry with Roy Dickinson in 'Korks' Otley. Terry told me that heís looking to put these photos up in the pub sometime this year, so look out for them.
Other things that this pub has include a darts board, pool table and some decent Leeds United memorabilia from the glory days. So if you want a pint in a place that boasts such historic nostalgia, then why not come and have yourself a pint in the 'Merry Monk. this season?
Your presence will be more than welcome and if only for that signed photo alone, youíll leave smiling. Also donít forget to take a photo of yourselves in front of the window upon which an artist has painted the Rhinos logo.
