Mr X Speaks - 14th October 2010
Posted by southstander on October 14 2010 - 11:15:10

by Mr X

In our constant quest for novelty and diversity we bring you a new column from a brand new author, one who has not previously graced the main pages of SouthStander.com.

Mr X is looking to the future, to tartan slippers and a rug over his knee as he tried to justify the need for stadium upgrades throughout the league, in the interests of the future of our game.

Read more here....

This week I've had a bit of a nostalgic trip regarding our great game. I'm not talking about the action on the pitch, but about the surroundings from where we watch the game and experience the match days. The other week I mentioned briefly about Knowsley Road hosting its final ever game and this for me was quite sad as it always seem to be a perfect place to watch a Rugby League game. Yes it was falling to pieces and the Chilean Miners had a better toilet to visit (see I had to get one mention in....) but it was a piece of history and you couldn't beat going to Black Bull before the game.

Change has to happen as we all know, the birth of Super League in the mid-1990s meant clubs had to look forward rather than look to the past, away fram a time where men would go watch their team on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and shiver in the winter cold.

Step forward to 2010, its coming up to a decade and a half since Super League and part of me thinks our stadia are slowly but surely creeping into the stadiums our sport needed when Super League started. The match day experience of going to an all-seater stadium can't be knocked, get a seat to watch the game, a fantastic view and facilities which offer added comfort to a match day experience (shame rubbish burgers are still around at most of them). That said, going to games at the Jungle, Odsal, Belle Vue etc still feels fantastic with a nostalgic view in front of you.

This round-a-bout discussion leads me on to the proposed plans to rebuild Headingley. The old lady herself needs tarting up as she is crumbling around the edges and falls a long way behind what the HJ, KC & DW stadiums have to offer. Part of me thinks they have missed the boat a bit when it comes to in certain areas. For me the South Stand should have been made into a seated stand (I await the backlash) but moving forward with the times it would be a nice idea. The North Stand design looks great and obviously with the limitations of the location of the Western Terrace nothing much can be done here.

Change is a good thing but maybe in my older years I fancy the idea of comfort and sitting down to watch games... Mr X
