The Damo Bit - 5th October 2010

by DAMO-LEEDS

As the final curtain falls on the 2010 season our Damo has chance to reflect on the skills and experience brought to our game by those from foreign shores.

These guys sacrifice a lot for our pleasure and entertainment.

Leaving your homeland and travelling to somewhere distant to earn a living can’t be the most prettiest of prospects in this world. Well I suppose doing a job that you like helps, and that’s what many rugby league players from the southern Hemisphere do. So today I want to thank those players from the other side of the world who entertain us with their skill whilst leaving friends and family behind in the process.

People like Menzie Yere who came here from a third world country, not only to play rugby league but to set up a charity in the progress to help out those less fortunate from where he comes from. His charity kits2kids collects kit from companies, clubs, schools and individuals to send back to Papa New Guinea. If you have any old kits that you no longer then feel free to check out his website on how you can go about donating - www.kits2kids.com.

Then of course there’s plenty of Australians and Kiwis in Superleague that do a fantastic throughout the engage Superleague season. This season in particular I’ve enjoyed Australians Craig Fitzgibbon, Brett Delaney, Pat Richards, Michael Monaghan and Matt Orford to name a few. But my favourite foreign super league player comes in the shape of a Kiwi called Rangi Chase who is an absolute joy to watch when Castleford are on sky sports.

Also a big thanks to the Australian coaches that have come over and improved our game over here. Its not surprising that it was two Aussies coaching the grand final teams in the shape of Mick Potter and Michael Maguire. Big mentions must also go out to Tony Smith and Nathan Brown who’ve had such great impact at their respective clubs.

Finally I just want to say a big thanks to Brian "Bluey" McClennan for inspiring that Challenge Cup run earlier in the season. Whilst you may not have got us to a forth consecutive win, I feel that the cup run is more than enough to prove that this year has been a success. Okay we fell at the end but you once said that ‘I can’t promise you we’ll win things but what I can promise you is that you will have the best time you’ll ever have along the way’ and its true.

As fans we had the best time along the way and I’m sure we’ll continue that journey until you leave.

Thanks for a fantastic year bluey!
