Mr X Speaks - 15th September 2010
Posted by southstander on September 15 2010 - 15:23:29

by Mr X

In our constant quest for novelty and diversity we bring you a new column from a brand new author, one who has not previously graced the main pages of SouthStander.com.

In his first column our new correspondant takes a look at the massive preparations for the 2012 Olympics and draws some comparisons with the 2013 RFL World Cup. Are we in the same league?

Read more here....

This week the London 2012 Olympic games has started it's massive people appeal for volunteers for the event. It's an event with two years to go, which is on schedule, and people already know where the venues are and know what the logo looks like.

Twelve Months after the Olypics we have the Rugby League World Cup 2013 being held in England...and what do we know? Yeah thatís right; the mighty Wales are competing in the tournament (without humiliation of being knocked out in the qualifiers); and, we have a similar competition layout...thatís it! Now our game, as we know, usually makes a hash of things but given we have three years to go, Mr X here is already wondering if the RFL and the RLIF are scratching their heads wondering if this event will match embarrassment levels reached during the 2000 World Cup (Anyone else remember being at Headingley for England v Ireland?).

Mr X has thought of some ideas that could help the marketing of the tournament in the next year.

  • Introduce us to some branding and identification of the tournament For example next season say at Wembley for the Cup Final, introduce the World to the logo and mascot of the tournament. Perfect stage for people to get themselves introduced to the product that isnít that far away.
  • Give an indication of where games are to be played? The Union lot have told us where there games are to be held for their feast of fun a year after, why havenít we? We have the stadiums around us, so lets celebrate this.
  • Try and get high level blue ribboned backing, Gillete sponsor the 4 Nations. Work with them and get them to back the World Cup. Get players working with them, get the appeal of Rugby League out there.
  • Start using a phrase "It's Coming..." simple and effective. Put the tournament logo with it and the advertising starts.
  • Now Mr X knows this won't happen, as our games leaders can't even get the right people banned and disciplined properly (yes thatís aimed at you Mr J Tomkins) but to stop this tournament turning into another big White Elephant for the sport we need to approach this differently than in previous times.

Now seeing as McGuire is out, hereís an interesting tit bit. According to Rhinos 2007 handbook, Chris Clarkson was a Stand Off, could he be used there for the game a week on Saturday if he is fit?

My score predictions for this weekend: Wigan by 14, Wire by 12

    Till Next Week.... Mr X
