When I left Temple Moor High School back in May 1984 as a fresh faced 17 year old, the only dream I had was to play for Leeds at Wembley. I was a skinny 7 stone stand off at school but never really made it in the real world, so had to settle for second best and stand on the terraces watching my heroes. I would never have believed that 25 years on, I’d still be standing in the same spot on the eastern terrace, shouting and cheering my team to victory, but nowadays it’s the same name just different players.
But amongst the current team of super heroes is a 20 year old who only 3 years ago left the very same school as I did with the same dreams and aspirations, this hero of mine is Chris Clarkson. Chris, who’d already made a name for himself with East Leeds, Yorkshire and England at U17 level, has come through the academy ranks at Leeds and with his recent 1st team performances has made sure he’ll be one of the first names in Blueys 17 at the weekend and will be living his dream on Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout Wembley crowd. We are worlds apart, but share the same dream.
Another team that will be living there dream, but at a much younger age, will be our former schools year 7 rugby team who will be providing the entertainment in the curtain raiser against a team from Barrow and South Lakes, it may just be a coincidence but they too beat a team from St Helens in the semi. I never got the chance to play out my dream of scoring ‘Kevin Dick’ style under the posts and lifting the cup high and proud above my head. But somebody has.
C’mon Chris, do it for yourself, do it for me, do it for Temple Moor High School, do it for all those other 17 year olds who have never quite managed to fulfil their dreams......and remember the schools motto.....
"Novae Mentis Templa Colima"............."Together we achieve success"
