Murrell To Get First Team Debut
Posted by southstander on May 19 2005 - 07:45:25

Debut

The Rhinos youth policy has once again come up trumps.

We understand that Scott Murrell will become the fourth player to be selected from the ranks of the U21's this season when Smith names him in the seventeen for tomorrow night in the return fixture against Leigh Centurions.

Three players from last, and this, years Under 21's squad have already shown that they can produce the goods at senior level by estabblishing themselves in the first team. Liam Botham has probably been the most successful, commanding a regular place in recent weeks, and impressing by getting over the whitewash with some regularity.

Nick Scruton and Lee Smith have also grasped their opportunities for top level football with both hands and have deputised well for regular first teamers. All three of these players appear to have what it takes and are likely to feature further in the Rhinos championship challenge.

Scott Murrell has been named in Smiths' initial twenty on several occasions this season, but friday nigh will be the first time that he has made it into the seventeen. His first team exposure so far has been limited to the pre-season friendlies against Hunslet, York and Oldham where he scored a try.

All credit to the Academy staff who despite disappointment at failing to make the top U21 division continue to provide the life-blood of the Rhinos first team. Long may their success continue.
