The Damo Bit - 13th April 2010
Posted by southstander on April 13 2010 - 14:43:57

by DAMO-LEEDS

Over the years there have been some magical Challenge Cup moments but in recent memory these have been far too infrequent for most Rhinos supporters.

The great competition sees the Superleague sides take their 2010 bow this weekend with Leeds v. Hull FC being the tie of the round.

A Challenge Cup minded Damo is here....

Leeds and The Challenge Cup

At the end of the last millennium Leeds won the Challenge Cup and finished the competition in style beating the, then named, London Bronco’s 52 - 16 at the old Wembley, a result which still stands as the biggest winning margin for the cup final. Leroy Rivett earned his Lance Todd trophy that day by running in a record book dismantling four tries. A feat that was unheard of before and has not been repeated since.

Since that victory Leeds haven’t made much of a mark in the challenge cup, apart from memorable semi-final games against St Helens last decade. Most memorable of all was the 2003 challenge cup semi-final win where Danny McGuire scored a try in the last minute needing Kevin Sinfield to kick over for the two to ensure play goes into extra time. Doing just that it was now extra time in a game that was to be the longest semi final in challenge cup history.

Despite immense pressure on the Leeds line our players showed strength in depth to defend. Soon it was our ball and Danny McGuire got in again along with Sinfield chipping over a icing on the cake drop goal. A match I feel that was second-to-non when it came to entertaining rugby league. Unfortunately the challenge cup final match that followed up we lost against our deadly local rivals the Bulls. Bless the Bulls because they’ve only got 5 challenge cups to our 11.

The last cup final we played in was in 2005 against the same team we shall be contesting in the cup this weekend. If it had been at Wembley the Hull FC wouldn’t of won, they've never won at Wembley. But because the new Wembley was still under construction all the bad luck came our way. Hopefully Hull FC will do what’s best for them this weekend and let Leeds win the game so that they can concentrate on the league. Next time this fishermen will win this cup is when the New New Wembley is getting rebuilt sometime around 2100 - 2105.

Whatever the result it should be a good game between the two this weekend and may the best team on the day win!

Thanks for reading.
