David Bywaters Player Appraisal - Dragons Away
Posted by southstander on April 06 2010 - 21:30:58

Davids MoM
by David Bywater

After a couple of season off, we've once again asked Davidbyw to cast his eye over the Rhinos performances of the weekend and pass numerical judgement on the players.

Bound to be controversial, and to spark debate on the message boards, we'll keep tabs over the season and see if Davids appraisal of player of the season tallies with your Man-of-the-match votes.

Here are David’s thoughts about Monday’s game against the Dragons in the South of France, ;

1Webb8His best performance of the season – one brilliant take of a high ball with McGuire running straight at him – very close to my MOM
2Smith7Not quite the impact of Thursday; although he took his try well – looked more vulnerable in defence – Touxagas exposed his lack of recent match practice.
3Delaney6Unconvincing – especially in defence – if we bought him primarily for his ability to stop tries then it could be a disappointing season – however he could be struggling for fitness.
4Senior7Much improved on Thursday’s performance – looked much more at home when the halves got him some quick ball – although a couple of passes to Hall should have been delayed a little longer.
5Hall6A couple of great takes over his head close to the line; Ryan still looked ill-at-ease when the Catalans had the ball, hopefully if Keith improves so will Ryan
6Sinfield8One howler apart a very good performance, the back handed pass to McGuire for Danny’s second try was worth the admission money on its own
7McGuire8Scored two; beautiful side step for the second, made one with a carbon copy of the Smith try on Thursday. The frailties in his defence were again exposed by the rugged Frenchies.
8Leuluai6He gave away two silly penalties that lead to the Catalans scoring in the next set and made little impact when carrying the ball – although a nice piece of interplay for Ali’s try
9Diskin9My MOM – reveled in the role as the only hooker. Ran intelligently from dummy half and tackled himself to a standstill. The only blot was the knock on from the PTB that handed the Dragons the momentum
10Bailey7Looked tired – having said that he really ran the ball in when given the opportunity but didn’t contribute his usual amount in defence
11Lauiti'iti7Good anticipation for his try and a strong all round performance – seemed to relish the faster ground
12Jones-Buchanan7If I am not mistaken once again played all 80. Rewarded with a walk-in try and no dropped ball – whatever you say about some of the deficiencies in JJB’s game one thing you can never question is his total commitment to the cause
13Ablett6Not unexpectedly struggled a bit with the pace of the game and miss-timed a few tackles – very good to see him back all-the same. A natural loose forward whose return can only benefit the side.
14Kirke5Looked very tired, how slow was he getting of the tackle – hasn’t really improved in the last two seasons – not sure what Ian’s USP is to be honest
15Burrow7Not a complete success this; Rob’s introduction seemed to upset the tempo and structure of the attack. On a positive big defensive effort and a couple of really nice kicks when the Rhinos were really up against it
16Ambler7Enthusiastic, always willing to take the ball in and didn’t shirk a tackle; missed a few mind but doesn’t look out of place at this level – brings more positives than negatives.
17Burgess7Very similar to Thursday; ran well with the ball and put in a pretty good defensive effort. The one blot was the offload late in the game when possession was all important
