David Bywaters Player Appraisal - Giants Away
Posted by southstander on March 15 2010 - 15:38:40

Davids MoM
by David Bywater

After a couple of season off, we've once again asked Davidbyw to cast his eye over the Rhinos performances of the weekend and pass numerical judgement on the players.

Bound to be controversial, and to spark debate on the message boards, we'll keep tabs over the season and see if Davids appraisal of player of the season tallies with your Man-of-the-match votes.

Here are David’s thoughts about Sunday’s game against Huddersfield at the Galpharm:

1Webb7Looked a lot fitter than he has in previous weeks. Showed a lot more urgency on retrieving the kick through and linked well into the attacking line
2Watkins0Went off with what looked like a very serious leg injury; if the reaction is anything to go by. Hopefully it will not be as bad as it looked
3Delaney7How fit is he? Started the game with his right thigh heavily strapped and finished the game barely able to run. Neat kick through for Hall’s try, went very close in the second half when he just failed to reach out for a try. Massive effort given his fitness issues
4Senior7Sadly wasted on wing the where his contribution was very limited – unfortunately injuries left McClennan with little option. Unfortunately his tug back after putting Watkins through led to a momentum change - the Giants scored off the next two sets.
5Hall7Another walking wounded – took his try well considering he was running on one leg – not surprisingly largely ineffective in the second half due to a heavily strapped knee – did well to play the whole 80
6McGuire7Did not ask enough questions ball in hand and bombed a couple of good opportunities. Nice try and worked really hard in defence, the basis of his score. Another who may struggle to play on Friday
7Burrow8Very good today, really took the line on and showed how difficult a player he is to deal with when he is on form. 4/4 kicks and a very solid tackling game to boot
8Leuluai6Just not at the races today – zero impact ball in hand, and very flat footed in defence, his lack of lateral mobility was exposed more than once.
9Buderus6I was very pleased when Leeds signed him, now I am inclined to agree with Gareth/Danny – not sure what he is adding to the side – yesterday when the side needed him to stand and be counted he failed to deliver
10Bailey9Close call with Peacock for MOM, Peacock aside, if there is a better prop in SL I haven’t seen them. Massive effort, especially when you consider he looked injured after 20 minutes.
11Jones Buchanan7Wasted in centre but with little option Jamie made the best of a bad job. His effort cannot be questioned but he hasn’t got the speed or the ball skills to play centre effectively
12Peacock10My MOM – played 80 mins of flawless rugby, worked himself into the ground with a massive tackling and ball running stint. I thought Jamie had been coasting this season, he certainly didn’t coast at the Galpharm - superb
13Kirke7An enigma, huge bloke who seems incapable of punching his weight – I would have thought close to the line he would be the ideal player running on to the ball – but he seems reticent to take the responsibility.
14Lauiti’iti7His sin bin hurt Leeds more than Rayleigh’s hurt the Giants. Leeds had the momentum in the game and that flow was really disturbed. Ali needs a much quicker PTB to show his skills than Leeds are currently providing.
15Diskin7Better than Buderus, not saying much, but his inability to pass accurately from the floor hurt Leeds. Twice in one set in the second half inside the Giants 20 Matt threw a pass to nobody and effectively killed the flow.
16Burgess7Sadly for Luke defence is an important part of the game – his terrible arms-length technique was once again exposed as he gave away the penalty to put the Giants 6 in front. He was also subbed after another poor attempt in centre field. His offload for McGuire’s try was superb but he really needs to work on his defence
17Pitts7Again looked the part, although seemed to struggle with the pace of the game in the second half. Hopefully his run in the side will continue – he can only improve with more exposure to this standard of play.
