John Holmes |
I am not ashamed to say that I only came across John Holmes last year when someone came on the forums asking for information about him. Iím not ashamed because John Holmes was the kind of person who just got on with things and from what I can gather didnít shout about it much.
Unfortunately the second time I heard about him was his untimely death on September 27th 2009. It was sad news for the club and all those who knew the Great John Holmes. He gave such service to the club starting as an awestruck 16 year old that went on to make a record 625 appearances for Leeds. Iím sure that his professionalism is the what every rugby league playing school kid should aspire to be.
Two very notable fitting tributes were paid to John Holmes after his death. Firstly we had over 100 of his former team mates joining both current Catalan Dragons and Leeds Rhinos players on the pitch for a minutes silence. The match after that was one that Iím sure John Holmes would of enjoyed and was arguably the best Superleague play-off semi-final of all time.
Secondly we had our current captain Kevin Sinfield dedicating the Grand Final win over St Helens to the ever great John Holmes. A fitting end to a year that saw the club lose its best ever servant.
The tip of the iceberg is that a book is now been released about the great life of John Holmes. A book I feel should be on every bookshelf in this city for future generations to see. Whilst I havenít read the book as it hasnít been released as yet, but youíve got my word that itíll be a cracker.
Heís the bloke that experienced it all, from scoring two drop goals for Great Britain (one of eighteen
Players to only of done that), played in 19 major finals for Leeds, and was a World Cup Winner for Great Britain in 1972 to name just a few of his achievements. Itís the life that so many sports men dream of but so few achieve.
So please be sure to get the book and I do hope the authors get paid to serialise it in the YEP as well so that people from outside the sport can see what this bloke did for our great city.
For that may you forever rest in peace John Holmes.
