Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics

Statistics
The excitement starts tonight with the Rhinos taking on the Robins at Headingley.

But what does the form guide tell us about what we can expect for the next four weeks in the lead up to Old Trafford?

We take a look at the eight sides form over the last five matches and speculate on the outcome based on the statistics.

Eight sides enter this weekends play-offs with the expectation that it will be they that are lifting the Superleague Trophy aloft at Old Trafford on the 10th October. Okay, perhaps seven sides, it looks like Saints and their fans have given up already.

We decided to take a look back at the form of the eight sides over the last five weeks of Superleague competition, a period which takes us back to the start of August. During that period there are two unbeaten sides, the Rhinos and the Wildcats, with the Saints and Tigers having the worst record with just two wins from five.

Based on this five game form lets take a look at the play-off series and speculate as to the outcomes and results. We will work on average points scored It isn't the most scientific way of doing things it will give us an indication of what we might expect.

In the opening weekend the statistics suggest;

Rhinos43Hull KR27Leeds by 16
Saints11Giants28Giants by 17
Wildcats35Dragons20Wildcats by 15
Warriors24Tigers30Tigers by 6

So we'd lose the Warriors and the Dragons at this stage. The second weeks eliminators would shape up as;

Saints11Tigers30Tigers by 19
Hull KR27Wildcats35Wildcats by 8

Second spot Saints end of season form lets them down and they exit the competition with fourth placed Hull KR. The Rhinos now have to select their opponents from the Giants, Wildcats and Tigers. I suspect that we'd go for the lowest placed side and take on the Tigers leaving the Giants to play the Wildcats. In the semi-finals;

Rhinos43Tigers30Rhinos by 13
Giants28Wildcats35Wildcats by 7

So an all West Yorkshire derby on the 10th October at Old Trafford with the Wildcats appearing for the first time against the back-to-back Champions. And the result in a closely contested final?

Rhinos43Wildcats35Rhinos by 8

The Rhinos to lift the silverware for an unprecendented third time? Or, 'lies, damned lies, and statistics'. Tonight, and over the weekend, we'll find out more.
