Tad Rhinos Superleague XIV Preview - Play Offs 1

Now we hit the business end of the season.

The dust has settled after an exciting weekend and the top eight is set. The Rhinos host KR, and the Giants travel to Knowsley Road with the winners getting next weekend off. In the bottom four, the Wildcats host the Dragon and the Warriors entertain the Tigers, all playing knock-out football.

Here are my thoughts on this weekend's action in Super League XIV, first play-off week;

RHINOS v. KR

Last weeks poor display means nothing now, however, events in that game could influence this week. Briscoe is a major doubt as is Galea. Gene and especially Wheeldon face a trip to the RFL with a ban likely for at least one of them (ED: didn't happen).

Leeds should, Buderus apart, be at full strength.

When Saints were at there very best they had an arrogance about them, not a nasty one, just an aura that you knew meant come big game time they would rise to the occasion. I see that in Leeds now. When the kick-off comes on friday you just know we are going to play with a real intensity and desire. I see Leeds just edging it in the forwards but it's in the backs I see us winning it. Rovers have let in tries down the 2nd row/centre area's all season and I can see Ali and Keith causing havoc there on friday.

Dobson, for me Man of Steel, is the one to watch. Not so much in general play but his kicking game is the best in SL. I think Leeds will target him, Senior, Ali, Peacock, Ablett et al will run at him all night and target him. A great game but I fancy Leeds strongly in this one.

SAINTS v. GIANTS

A respected Saints fan on these boards, yes there is such a beast, tells me the three Leeds games apart Saints have been as poor as he has seen them in the last 15 years. Wellans is doubtful and with a lot of the team being either well into the veteran stage, or up and coming youngsters, there is little really top class anywhere in the Saints squad. For all there hissy fits Wilkin and Graham are the two warriors who will have to lead the way, and they will with Long trying to organise behind them. Pryce will influence in parts but I can see this being a real struggle for Saints as the Giants play like Saints did a few years back.

The Giants have got a lot of strike players and also have a big dominant pack. With hodgson probing from the back, Robinson and Brown picking holes and power out wide I can see this being a very tight game. If the Giants can go in the right frame of mind and get there discipline right I fancy them to come away with a victory here.

WILDCATS v. DRAGONS

This is a game between two teams who I really expect to do nothing in the play-offs. Both have good players, but also have far to many poor ones to make a big impact. This game boils down to one thing. If Brough is fully fit the Wildcats will win this one easily. If he isn't, I still fancy them to just sneak it. Either way the winners will go out in the next round.

WARRIORS v. TIGERS

A lot of people have tipped Wigan this season but I disagree. I still think they are three top players away from winning the GF. They have to many passengers and when it gets tough I think they just fall short. Teams are targets Paaleasina, whilst the other forwards, without Hock, doesn't really strike fear into you.

The Tigers are simply not good enough in defence. Teams attack Apu and he is a turnstile, although to be fair he isn't the only one. As with the Wakey game I think both teams will go out in the first two stages and the grand finalists will come from the top 4 teams.
