Tad Rhinos Superleague XIV Preview - Round 18

With the exception of the Giants v. Tigers match which none of our pundits got anywhere near, Tad predicted the correct winners in all matches and was within two points of the correct margin too. It is beginning to look like he may well have a time machine, but a slightly imperfect memory.

This weeks the Rhinos take on the Bulls, and six other fixtures.

Here are my thoughts on this weekend's action in Super League XIV, Round 18;

REDS v. GIANTS

The Reds were unlucky not to get something from the game at Hull last week while the Giants were totally outplayed at home to a Tigers side who had lost the previous five in a row. The Giants had the chances but bombed them all, whilst there big pack was dominated by their opponents. This could well be a good game, two good packs both with effective hookers, and some good halves. The diffeance is in the backs. Salford have little quality or pace in there backline and are in need of some quality in there. The Giants have pace all over and are really solid across the back. A close one but I fancy the Giants to come away with the spoils.

SAINTS v. CRUSADERS

The Welsh boys have done OK in their first season but this is a case of guess the winning margin. Could be anything from 20 to 50.

TIGERS v. DRAGONS

This is saturdays SKY game and it could well be a pretty decent game. Cas have been unlucky recently and apart from Saints haven't been far off winning a lot of there games. They seemed to put there bad run to bed with an outstanding display against the Giants last week and should be brimming with confidence. The Dragons are a different side away from home, rarely putting in the kind of displays which see them hard to beat in France. This again should be a fairly close game but I think home advantage is the key to this one.

KR v. WARRIORS

Wigan had a shocker last time out, losing in South Wales in an inept display so bad they should have had a yellow streak down the back of there jerseys. The Goons have been dire all season but the odd good game has seen them flatter to decieve and despite what the SKY team might say, and one pundit in particular, they are a club living on past reputations.

Rovers have been outstanding until recently. Perhaps other teams have worked out how to stop them, maybe they are just having a mid season blip. Either way I can't see them getting back the consistency they had in the first half of the season, although they will still be good enough to see off the Pies this weekend.

WILDCATS v. QUINS

The Quins, like Rovers have begun to struggle as of late. Maybe someone should tell them the idea is to peak at the end of the season not the start. The Londoners were comprehensivly beaten by the champions last weekend and injuries have also started to bite hard. The Wildcats have had there inconsistencies too, although of late they seem to have got some sort of form back. Brough and Drew should be to good for there opposites and I take Quins to drop further down the table after this one.

WOLVES v. FC

I fancied the Wolves to win in Spain last weekend and playing at home against a team who like tackling as much as dracula likes garlic seems to suggest an easy home win. Although the home side will be without the mercurial Briers they should still have to much power, pace and skill for what is a terrible Hull side.

RHINOS v. BULLS

I have said all season that because of the World Cup Leeds will amble along for much of the season just keeping in touch then going up a couple of gears as the play offs draw near. Last week saw evidence that Leeds are just starting to move up in intensity a little bit as they produced a great display of pace and power to hammer the Quins. The big players really delivered the goods and it was a pleasure to watch as they routed there opponents.

The Bulls have been terrible this season, games v. Leeds and Saints apart, and prove that if you sign average players you get an average team. If leeds can play at the pace they did last week I really can't see anything but a big home win. The Bulls need to really aim up, get into the Leeds pack and hope the referee is as generous to them as he was at Odsal. To be honest their best hope is to have Monsieur Halibut in the video referees box.
