Leeds Rhinos Under 18's travelled to Craven Park on the East side of Hull on Friday night, in their final grading game, looking for the win that would put them in with some sort of chance of qualifying for the Junior Academy Championship.

21's regulars Ashley Gibson, Jordan Tansey and Danny Williams dropped into the run on side with Jamie I'Anson on the bench, the Rhinos taking advantage of the Bye for the elder academy side.

Junior Academy Grading Phase

Hull Kingston Rovers 8 Leeds Rhinos 34

On another bitterly cold night on the East coast the Rhinos gave themselves a fighting chance of qualifying for the Championship by defeating Hull KR 34-8 in a performance that being truthful never really hit the heights and expectations of coach John Bastian. The Rhinos were on the board inside 90 seconds. Tom Burton charged down a kick to give the Rhinos field position, then Tansey and Chaz I'Anson created the space for Ayden Faal to send James Endersby in at the corner. Ashley Gibson missed the conversion.

The Rhinos then struck twice in three minutes, Tansey released Haley with a super flat pass and the stand off back up to collect the return pass and gallop in behind the posts, then in the 9th minute Frankie Marino dropped a Tansey bomb and Michael Brown was on hand to send Danny Williams in. Gibson converted both and the Rhinos led 16-0.

The Rhinos went in twice more before half time, on 19 minutes Tansey and Burton created a chance for Michael Brown and he showed great strength to get in at the corner. Gibson converted superbly from the sideline and he was then heavily involved in the movement which sent Danny Williams in for his second try after 28 minutes. Gibson again with the extras to send the Rhinos 28-0 to the good at half time.

The second half was a much different story, the Rhinos struggled to complete their sets and were turning the ball over cheaply and in some silly positions. Rovers were first on the board five minutes into the second half when Everitt sent Ross Normanton in at the corner. The Rhinos had a scare on 58 minutes when Chaz I'Anson was stretchered from the field, but he was ok to return to the bench a short time later.

The Rhinos got their one score of the second half in the 65th minute, when Joe Walsh put Danny Williams into a gap and the second rower but the razzle dazzle footwork on to leave Ross Normanton for dead and stroll over under the posts. Gibson converted to give the Rhinos a 30 point gap. However it was Rovers who had the last say with 10 minutes left, after and error from James Brown, Matty Ellis was held up just short of the line. Before the Rhinos defence could reorganise Andy Speed send Wayne Dannatt in at the corner. Evritt was off target to leave the final score at 34-8 to the Rhinos.

The man of the match was Danny Williams.
