Indiscipline Proves Costly
Posted by southstander on March 20 2009 - 23:30:07

Two Tries

For the second weekend running the Rhinos were involved in the tie of the round as they traveled to Knowsley Road to take on a Saints side who had a chance of moving into top spot with a win.

Would the Rhinos be able to carry on their form of last weekend and take the two points again or would the Saints find another gear after their own slow start. Something had to give and nearly fourteen thousand made their way into the stadium to see who it would be.

We bring you all of the action here......

Indiscipline Proves Costly

Leeds welcomed back Webb, Diskin and Senior to the starting line-up but were now without Lauiti'iti, Kirke and the longer term Buderus. As quick as the Rhinos medical staff are getting players out on the field new ones seem to be joining the back of the queue.

It was, nevertheless, a strong Leeds side which took the field and from the outset they bossed the early stages of the game. Saints dropped ball under ferocious Leeds defence was reminiscent of last week, but this week the Saints defence gave as good as they got and despite a ten minute barrage they kept Leeds scoreless.

As the first ten minutes belonged to Leeds, the second ten was all Saints and they did what Leeds couldn't, crossed the whitewash.

On thirteen minutes the Rhinos were pulled from a forward pass (forward being the first word taught to infant Saints supporters). Saints took advantage from the scrum and gave the ball air eventually allowing Gidley to cross of a Long pass (one occasion where the Saints fans missed the forwardness). Long slotted the extras and we were behind.

On eighteen Rob Burrow was flattened and helped from the field, we feared the worst. But rather than put our heads down, five minutes later and we were level.

It was Leeds turn to keep the ball alive with good offloads and as the ball was finally moved left Senior slid over in the corner. Sinfield goaled superbly from the touchline to level us up at 6-6.

So far the scoring reflected the game.

Laid Out Again

With five minutes left in the half Saints hit us with a double-wammy, a quick couple of tries which would ultimately seal the game in their favour.

On thirty-five Roby went over off a short pass from Flannery and rounded behind the sticks making Longs conversion and formality. Four minutes later and after being forced to drop-out from under our sticks we forgot to tackle Leon Pryce and he went over off a thirty metre run. Long kicked the two and we went into half time wondering how we were 18-06 down after sharing possession and territory.

The game was still there for the taking but we'd need our wits about us.

The opening quarter of the second half was marred by indiscipline and poor refereeing. As Gilmour tried to scalp Lee Smith in a tackle Smith struck out and was pummelled by Gilmour. Bentham conveniently missed the hair pulling and haymakers and penalised Leeds. Second later and Bailey put in a massive shoulder charge which saw the popular stand wrongly baying for his blood. Saints were more rattled by the incidents than Leeds and after progressing well from a penalty a miss-out ball from Webb by-passed Senior and found Hall to go over in the corner. Sinfield added the two to make it 12-18.

Out of Sorts
Now it should have been game on but the Rhinos indiscipline was their worst enemy.

JJB was penalised for back-chat and Peacock turned a scrum into a penalty with his petulance.

Then on sixty-three a nice passing move involving Pryce, Wilkin and Wellens saw Wheeler over in the corner. With Long off the field he tried to convert his own try but failed. 12-22.

On sixty-nine the game was beyond us as a break from Flannery saw several Leeds missed tackles and Gidley ran the remaining twenty to score. Gidley missed the conversion as Saints - you score, you convert policy backfired again as Long warmed the bench.

A Sinfield converted Keith Senior try in the dying second was less consolation than finding that Castleford had upset Hull FC at the KC and left us in top spot.

At 18-26 we weren't disgraced but the game was there to be won if we'd kept our cool and kept our discipline. The Rhinos defence was not up its usual standard tonight and we has a lot less space and chance to run than we have had in every other Superleague game so far this season. We lost, we're still top (just), and it is no disaster.

And...the last twice that we've lost at Saints and played them again a fortnight later, we've won the second game. Bring on the cup game and the side unbeaten in it for three years!
