Second Half Stunner
Posted by southstander on February 20 2009 - 23:42:52

Well Skippered

Leeds welcomed back Sinfield and Senior but were without Danny Buderus and Ali Lauiti'iti for tonights visit to Craven Park to take on a strong looking Hull KR side looking to repeat their success of two years ago.

The question on everyones lips was whether the Rhinos would be interested in playing this game, or more interested in preserving their bodies for next weeks prestige match up against the Sea Eagles.

We bring you all of the action here......

Round 2

Second Half Stunner

It always seems to rain when we play Hull KR, and tonight was no exception as the sides were welcomed onto the pitch by a full house, being soaked by an east coast downpour.

It took just four minutes for Leeds to get on the board. A second set of six in the KR danger zone saw Leeds probing well before a McGuire pass put Carl Ablett through a massive gap to cross. Sinfield slid the conversion attempt in front of the sticks.

After nine the home side took the lead. A Diskin penalty for holding down gave KR ground and on the second last a grubber from Cooke was collected by Briscoe who scored under the sticks. Dobson kicked an easy two for 4-6.

The game was shaping up to be a cracker.

It was Leeds turn to be back down the KR end and after Hall did well to keep the ball alive a Sinfield grubber looked to be scored by Scott Donald but the video referee ruled a Leeds knock-on in the in-goal area.

On sixteen Phil Bentham decided that Leeds were offside in front of the sticks and Dobson slotted over the two to double the leading margin.
Leeds were then put under a lot of pressure, making things worse by conceeding several penalties. KR declined the chances of adding penalty goals on a couple of occasions, going for the quick tap instead.

With three minutes left on the clock, the Rhinos once again were penalised for offside and this time Dobson goaled to take the score to 4-10. It was difficult to argue that it wasn't deserved, as KR were dominating.

Leeds Opener

We needed a massive second half to retain a 100% record which was looking more and more in danger as the half wore on. It was a big ask, but we were only six behind.

On forty-seven we were right back in it. A Sinfield cross-field kick was caught by Senior and passed back through his legs to McShane who passed inside to Hall finding a gap to score. Sinfield goaled to tie the scores up at 10-10.

Stretchered Off
As the second half wore on, Leeds started to play smarter and gained the upper hand.

With a kickable penalty Leeds tapped when the Rhinos fans were yelling for the two. Three plays later and Senior appeared to have crossed but the video referee ruled 'held-up'.

On sixty-five Bentham decided to give KR respite and sin-binned McShane for what appeared to be back chat after yet another penalty against us for offside - he was the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now we were really up against it. Ten of the remaining fourteen with a man down.

Within seconds a Dobson grubber was missed by Hall in goal and as Webster went to touch it down he appeared to knock-on and the video referee chalked off the try. We'd survived an almighty scare, perhaps the rugby gods were on our side.

On sixty-seven Fox held McGuire down on the KR twenty after a brilliant Leeds rolling break, and saw yellow for a professional foul. Sinfield took the welcome two and Leeds had the lead, with the sides numbers levelled at 12-12.

On seventy-two we opened up daylight when a Bailey break found Kallum Watkins to go ten and dive over in the corner. An age passed as Bailey, hit hard by Briscoe after the pass that put Watkins over, was given oxygen and carefully stretchered off the field. Sinfield kept his concentration and kicked brilliantly from close to the touchline for 18-10.

Four minutes left and sensational Leeds defence put Webster into touch when it looked like he was going to narrow the margin.

In the final minute Sinfield kicked a drop-goal from ten metres out to take us to 19-10. The clock ran down with Leeds defending but we'd kept the home side scoreless in the second half and won a difficult victory.

We were outplayed in the first half and lucky to only be six behind at the break. Ryan Hall had the kind of game he will be wanting to forget as he dropped high balls and knocked on. In the second half we were a different side and as KR tired we took full advantage of a couple of lucky breaks and lucky calls to seal the victory.

It looked like we picked up a few knocks but I understand that Ryan Bailey was up and about as the final hooter went but will probably have to pass a cog test before being declared fit for next week. We also seemed to pick up a couple of other knocks, but hopefully nothing serious.

I suspect that Bluey will look at discipling this week because if we give away that many penalties at Elland Road next week then we will have no chance.

Bring on the Sea Eagles!
