U18's - Game Went to the Wire

Sin-Binned
by Matthew Horton

The under 18's took on Warrington Wolves at Headingley yesterday looking to build on the big win against the London Broncos the week before.

Liam Halliday was still out injured for a young Rhinos side who had to face up to Andy Bracek who has made appearances in the first team at Warrington this season.

Junior Academy Grading Phase

Leeds Rhinos 20 Warrington Wolves 22

Warrington opened the scoring on two minutes when Andy Moulsdale picked up a knock on from Joe Walsh to go in untouched from 30 meters. Moulsdale converted. The Rhinos hit back on 14 minutes, good work from Briggs and Burton creating the space for Michael Brown to go in at the corner. Briggs converted.

Warrington went back in from after 20 minutes, Moulsdale spinning over from dummy half after Riley had been held short. Moulsdale again converting. The Rhinos began to pressure the Wolves line and had a try ruled out on 31 minutes when a pass from Faal to Ratu was ruled forward by the Touch Judge. But three minutes later the big second rower went in after good work by Townend and Knowles. Townend was unsuccessful with the conversion and it took the Rhinos into half time 12-10 down.

The Rhinos came out firing in the second half and struck on their first set, a huge bomb from Chaz I'Anson was claimed by James Brown, he passed back to I'Anson and he drew the full back to send Mike Ratu in. Townend again off target. On 53 minutes the Rhinos struck again, I'Anson released Faal who got a Gidley-esque flick to Danny Ireland, the winger went for the South-East corner but instead flung the ball inside and Ratu was on hand to pick up and dive over. James Enderby missing the conversion this time and the Rhinos were 18-12 to the good. The Rhinos lead was extended on 58 minutes, after shaving the post 2 minutes earlier Luke Gale slotted a penalty over from 10 metres out after Warrington were penalised for ball stealing.

Warrington hit back, on 61 minutes a super offload from Moulsdale sent Paul Reynolds in at the North-West corner, Moulsdale again converting to bring the Wolves back to within 2 points. Then Danny Ireland was sin-binned on 67 minutes after obstructing Kevin Penny after a kick through from a scrum by Chris Hull. From the set after the penalty the Wolves struck. Moulsdale released Bracek and the second rower put Danny Colquit in again at the North-West corner. Moulsdale was off target but the Wolves were in front again at 22-20.

Leeds began to pressure the Warrington line but the defence was resolute. The Rhinos though they had snatched the game with three minutes to go when Michael Brown went in at the corner after good work by Joe Walsh and Tom Burton, but the Touch Judge ruled the initial pass from Walsh was forward, he then gave the Touch Judge his opinion of the call and was sin-binned. With that, any hope Leeds had of winning the game was gone.

It was an encouraging performance though as despite defeat there were some big performances from Mike Ratu, Michael Haley, Dean Townend and Ayden Faal who was named man of the match. Leeds though let a 20-12 slip in the second half and Warrington's winning try from Colquit was scored while Danny Ireland was in the Sin Bin. The Rhinos were on the end of a couple of harsh decisions from the officials, two tries ruled out for forwards passes which from my position on the gantry looked to be harsh to say the least. Goal kicking was the difference at the end of the day, Leeds were 2 from 6, while Andy Moulsdale was 3 from 4 for the visitors. Warrington celebrated like they had won the Grand Final at the end of proceedings but the Rhinos still have a chance of qualifying for the Championship phase of the season. The next fixture for the Under 18's is next Friday night at Hull Kingston Rovers with a 7.30pm kick off.
