Confidence Boost Ahead of Crunch France Trip
Posted by southstander on July 11 2008 - 22:26:46

Great Game

Torrential rain and squeegie machines welcomes our visitors Huddersfield Giants to Headingley tonight as they looked to build on last weeks success over the Bulls, and we looked to stop the rot that had seen three defeats in the last four games.

What was needed was a big confidence boosting win ahead of next weeks trip to Perpignan for a tricky fixture against third placed Catalans Dragons.

The stage was set.

We bring you all of the action here......

Confidence Boost Ahead of Crunch France Trip

Leeds had Clinton Toopi back in the side for the first time since the World Club Challenge, but the conditions were dreadful, they could be a great leveller.

The Giants chalked up the first points, a Thorman goal after French referee Alibert called Leeds offside. It would be their last points for an hour.

On eleven, Leeds finally broke what had been a robust visitors defence when a superb JJB offload allowed a Webb break, wayward pass, hack on by Burrow and dribble over the line by Donald to drop on the ball. Sinfield goaled for 6-2 and we were underway.

On twenty a nice flowing move from right to left followed a couple of Leeds penalties, and another great JJB offload allowed McGuire to score. Sinfields extras made it 12-2.
Leeds had the last scoring action of the half, on twenty-six minutes. We'd gone close twice and then got head and feed at a scrum. Four plays later and a Burrow pass saw JJB rewarded for a great early effort as he crossed to score.

It had been a decent enough first half given the poor conditions. The Giants had never looked like scoring, and we'd made the best of the chances that we had.

Two Tries

It was a great start to the second half.

A high kick on the last was missed by Thorman, under pressure from Sinfield, and with the ball spilled over the line McGuire pounced to score a simple, if wet, try. Sinfield converted an easy one from in front of the sticks for 24-2.

Five minutes later and we were on the board again. Ellis was ducking and diving and then put in a brilliant offload to Ryan Hall who dove over in the corner from five metres out. Sinfield missed the extras but now it was 28-2 and the game was over as a competition.

Danny Brace
Four minutes later and the blitz had floored the visitors. A McGuire kick through on the last hit the post and spilled over the line before being touched down by Webb. All the Rhinos backs were getting in on the act. Sinfield goaled for 34-2.

On fifty-three, and making it four tries in eleven minutes, Senior pulled out a vintage run, slapping away tacklers, to score. Sinfield converted brilliantly from the touchline for 34-2.

The Giants head were now down, but the Rhinos kept pushing.

On sixty, Leuluai knocked on from the kick-off and from the scrum the Giants moved the ball right for Aspinwall to cross in the corner. Thorman added the extras to narrow the margin to 40-8, but not even the most optimistic Giants fan entertained hopes of a fightback.

Leeds had the last scoring action of the half on sixty-five when they kept the ball alive with nice hands which saw Hall go over in the right hand corner. Sinfield again converted brilliantly from the touchline for the final score of 46-8.

The Giants defence frustrated the Rhinos in the last quarter hour, and the end score could have been much higher, but in the end it was a solid, if unspectacular Leeds performance. Business back to normal.

Good performances from JJB, Toopi, Hall and McGuire. Slight concern over Diskin who had his elbow iced up in the second half. Comedy moment of the night? Masons attempted haymaker on Hall which saw him clean out Steve Snitch! Priceless.

Lets hope that the conditions next week are a little better than they were tonight!
