Three months to the day since the teams clashed at Stanningley the Rhinos and 'Quins reserve teams provided the pre -match entertainment at the Twickenham Stoop. The Rhinos included Eric Anselme and Ryan Hall as they looked to regain top spot after St Helens 60-10 victory over Bradford last night.

Capital Crunch for Rhinos

The Rhinos made a slow start the to the game and were punished after 3 minutes, Leeds hadn't had ball in hand when Dwayne Barker found George Coogan and the big second rower crashed over by the side of the posts. Dennis Tuffour added the extras to give the home side a 6 point lead. Jamie O'Callaghan nearly extended the lead but was held up over the line and there were 7 minutes on the clock before Leeds eventually got ball in hand.

Leeds got back into the game with 14 minutes on the clock, a super offload form Luke Hardbottle releasing Tom Sheldrake. The full back charged down field as as the Quins cover came across he found Gareth Moore who spun out of a tackle from Joe Walsh to get over by the posts. Simn Brown converted to level things up.

It was an even contest, with both sides unable to get through some good defence. It was Leeds who got the lucky break though on 28 minutes, Jow Howey charging down a kick bu Dylan Skee on half way before recovering the ball to go in under posts. Simon Brown added the extras to edge Leeds 12-6 ahead.

'Quins hit back 5 minutes later, after Leeds lost the ball on half way and conceded two penalties the home sinde levelled the game. Dylan Skee made up for his earlier error by releasing George Coogan, he looked like he was going to score himself but for some reason offloaded the ball and it was scooped up by Liam Prescott who went in under the posts to make the conversion for Tuffour a formality. The teams went in level at half time with Leeds looking to improve on their discipline in the second half in order for them to reclaim their place at the top of the table.

Leeds made the perfect start to the second half and were over in the first minute of the second half. A kick down field form Gareth Moore bounced wickedly away from Dennis Tuffour and Danny Allan tapped the ball over the line and touched down. Simon Brown added the conversion to edge Leeds ahead again. But the 'Quins wouldn't lie down and immediately hit back when two ex-Leeds Academy players combined. Dwayne Barker finding Dave Tootill and the prop reached out to score. Tuffour added the converstion to level the game at 18 all.

Leeds then has Simon Brown sin binned on 53 minutes, after being penalised for moving off the mark to play the ball there was some back chat from the Rhinos stand off and he was dispatched by the referee. After the Rhinos conceded yet another penalty the home side took immediate advantage, while the Rhinos defence was trying to get re-organised Dwayne Barker stepped through a huge gap to go in under the posts. The home side them made it two in a minute when Jamie O'Callaghan went through a huge gap in the Rhinos midfield defence and outpaced Jodie Broughton to get in at the corner. Tuffour converted the first try but suddenly the 'Quins had a 28-18 lead.

Leeds got back into the game with 18 minutes left, after getting a repeat set to pressure the Quins line it was Danny Allan who found a way through. After cutting through the defensive line he flicked the ball out one handed for Luke Hardbottle to go in by the side fo the posts. With Simon Brown still off the pitch, Gareth Moore added the conversion to reduce the gap the four points. Leeds could hang on though, after conceding a second penalty while in possession the Quins took advantage two minutes later when Dave Williams charged over from a Liam Prescott pass. Tuffour converted and the gap was back to ten points.

Leeds again found a way back into the game with ten minutes to go, this time Harlequins were penalised with ball in hand. Danny Allan didn't hang around, he took a quick tap penalty and got on the outside of the 'Quins defence to score a super solo effort. Simon Brown added the extras to again reduce the gap down to four points. The Rhinos then pressured the Leeds line, Chandler and Kaye going close. Kaye though lost the ball while attempting to score, a penalty allowed Harlequins to get downfield and Dylan Skee stepped through the Rhinos line and sent Dave Williams in for his second try of the game. Tuffour missed the conversion to leave the gap at 8.

Leeds weren't finished thoough and again they got their way back into the game. After going from deep Jodie Broughton released Ben Collins up the main stand touchline he got to the 30 metre line and found Broughton with the return pass and he was able to evade the attentions of Dennis Tuffour to touch down. Leeds tried everything they could to snatch the winning score but it wasn't to be. After an attempted chip through by Gareth Moore was gathered by Jon Grayshon the game was up and to add insult to injury the Quins scored on the last play of the game. Dwayne Barker had the ball ripped out near the Rhinos line, the ball went loose and James Anthony picked up to score in the corner. Tuffour missed the conversion and Harlequins were deserved 42-34 winners, only thesecond defeat of the season for the Rhinos at thie level.

Fair play to the home side they were full value for their victory this afternoon, the had their chances and they took them. The Rhinos were their own worst enemies, on the back of a 16-6 penalty count they were starved of the football. For the Rhinos Danny Allan led the way but it was just a day when nothing went right for Leeds and they will have to remedy things before St Helens arrive at Headingley Carnegie next Friday night.
