Rhinos cruise home

Captain's knock
By Matthew Horton

The second trip to National League opposition in the build up to 2007 as the Rhinos travelled to a bitterly cold Post Office Road to take on Featherstone. Jamie Thackray and Clinton Toopi were included to give them some game time before the season commences as a young Rhinos side battled through the conditions to see off a Featherstone team many are tipping to be there or there abouts when the money is dished out at the end of the season

Rhinos cruise home

The weather was shocking, as the Rhinos warmed up at the bottom end of the pitch. It's a great traditional Rugby League ground is Post Office Road and for the 2025 who bothered to turn up an entertaining game of football that was ruined in the first half by the constant whistle of Ben Thaler, the knock ons from Jamie Thackray and the fact at one point Leeds were reduced to 11 men by the official. The second half though was much more entertaining as the game was allowed to flow by the official.

Despite the home side twice being held up over the tryline it was the Rhinos who got on the board first after 18 minutes, Michael Brown making a break from deep within his own half and streaking upfield. He made it to half way when he had options either side from Williams and Tansey and the turned the ball infield to give the scrum half the run in from 40 metres out. Tansey then tagged on the extras.

Then the Rhinos incurred the wrath of referee Ben Thaler, who as part of his full time contract must have got a new whistle into the bargain, as he constantly penalised the Rhinos. He had a worth the skipper for the day Tansey, then in the 24th minute dispatched Smith to the Sin Bin, follwed 4 minutes later by Toopi. Both for holding down offences. Featherstone with and 2 man advantage quite rightly smelled blood and too their opportunity when Hughes sent Dale Cardoza in from short range. Dickens converted to tie the game up and that was how it stayed up to half time.

Then the half time entertainment, the PA man was very forthright in his opinions about decisions that had been taken in the past and was even giving put downs to a heckler from the main stand. Then they had a presentation to Chris Moyles which will form the basis of his radio show for the next three weeks.

The Rhinos now playing down the slope had the perfect start to the second half, a Featherstone mistake was recovered by Danny Williams and he set off downfield. He was caught by the cover defence but managed to slip the ball to Jason Hart who went in under the posts from 50 metres out. Tansey converted give the Rhinos back their 6 point cushion.

The Rhinos turned the game on its head within 3 second half minutes, in the 61st minutes a cheap Featherstone turnover gave the Rhinos posession in the Rovers 20. The ball was moved to Mike Ratu from the halfback Gale and Tansey and the centre got on the outside to get in at the corner. Then on the next set the try of the afternoon, the ball was moved down the short side. Quick hands from Gale and Ratu released Smith up the touchline and Michael Brown was inside to take the pass and go in under the posts. Tansey converted both tries to take the gap to 18 points

Featherstone though, now playing against a largley Academy line up never gave in a gained a consolation score with 12 minutes to go. Substitute prop Gareth Handforth eventually making his mind up to run with ball and barging over from 10 metres. Speake's conversion was wide to cut the gap to 10-24.

Leeds though had the final say with 4 minutes to go, from a scrum on halfway the ball was moved from Kyle Briggs to Jodie Broughton. He made the break through a tiring Rovers defence and Briggs was on hand to take the return pass and go in over the line. Tom Sheldrake converted the try with Tansey taking a break to give the Rhinos a comfortable 30-10 victory

Full credit to the home side, they tried their hearts out for Coach David Hobbs. Paul Hughes and Stuart Dickens were the stand out players for the home team. Dickens in fact played the first 65 minutes without a break. For the Rhinos Tansey and Gale were industrious, Ratu looked good in the centre and Michael Brown gave an assured performance at loose forward.
