Webb to Fill Morvins Boots?
Posted by southstander on June 26 2006 - 08:07:46

New Boy

The Rhinos asset stripping of the Vodaphone Warriors continues apace with the securing of New Zealand Test, and firm Warriors favourite, Brent Webb on a two year deal starting in 2007.

Many long time Leeds supporters will be relishing the arrival of the first antipodean owner of the number one jersey since the sensational Morvin Edwards thrilled us with his 110% performaces in the early 1990's.

Brent Webb will wave at departing full back Richie Mathers as their planes cross during the close season. Mathers is on his way to ply his trade at Gold Coast, while we settle the current New Zealand test full back into his Blue & Amber shirt ahead of the 2007 Superleague campaign.

One club Webb made his debut on April fools day in 2002 but has proved with 198 points in 96 first team appearances that he is no-ones idiot. At just twenty-five years old, Brent arrives at Headingley in his prime and willing to give us two of the best years of his life in furtherance of the quest for silverware.

Standing 5ft 9in and weighing in at 13st 2lb, Webb has been referred to as 'One of the finest attacking full backs of recent times.'. He has a propensity to break the line, and to offload under the tackle. Joining fellow New Zealanders Clinton Toopi and Ali Lauiti'iti, their combined play is certain to delight fans of open rugby.

Recognised eleven times for his country, Brent was voted supporters Player of the Season in 2003 and 2004.

The footsteps of a Leeds great in Morvin Edwards will be difficult ones to tread, but in Brent Webb there is the raw material to be a real improvement in the Rhinos side for 2007.
