rhinoms Superleague XVIII Previews - Play Offs III

After the drudgery of a Hull FC capitulation we were treated to a full-on game of rugby league on Froday night as the Saints visited Headingley in arguably the game of the season so far.

Just when you thought that the drama of a seventy-seventh minute drop goal couldn't be surpassed, Tony Smith decided not to show up for 'club call' as his minions announced that they'd decided to play minor premiers, Huddersfield Giants.

It was the first ever clubcall which didn't see the lowest available club get picked, how that could backfire on the Wolves and motivate the Giants.

We are now just two games away from knowing who will contest the 2013 Grand Final, just eighty more minutes for four teams to become two.

Here are this weeks Play off semi-finals previews.

Well, well, well, the coin was tossed and it happened to be a "double big headed" (as per big G the Giants mascot) one.

There was outrage from the Giants loyal few that their hub cap winning Club had been disrespected as for the 1st time in club call history the lowest ranked available pick (Rhinos) were over-looked.

On this side of the M62 it appeared to be both a "no brainer" not least because Wire have pasted the Giants comfortably all year but at the same time "once bitten" and the old adage of "never pick Leeds"!!

The biggest surprise for me especially was that we'd played a day later in an absolute energy sapping battle royale and lost 2 key back-rowers during our one point win against Saints and still avoided getting picked.

I expect this to be the closest battle between these two for a long time the visitors will be seething but at the same time looking to prove their challenge for Old Trafford is real and not a flash in the pan. Wire are fresh after a week off but the same could be said of the Giants who had an unopposed 70+ point training run against Big mouth Pearsons world class (PMSL) Cod eads.

Home advantage will just swing it for me but it should be a belter.

By virtue of Wire's club-call we return to the Pie-Dome three weeks after beating them up and winning comfortably there in Round 27 of the regular season.

However the hosts showed in week one of the play offs that they are still very much a genuine threat and serious contenders for the Grand Final.

Add in the emotion of Rat Boys departure and a home loss against us still fresh in their memory bank makes me expect a tough and determined Pie team.

We are battle hardened as usual at this time of year but not without the wounded Jjb and Delaney are big losses IF both miss out but also a huge gamble if the Coach selects one or both.

We have the tools, experience and know how to win this along with that sheer grit and desperation to hold onto "our" trophy but to be fair so do the Pies.

Its going to be a classic RL war and it will be getting the little things right that secures the win and passage to the Grand Final.

This could be the game of the year and it will be a fitting send off when the Blue 'n' Amber end Tomkins' Pie career with a home loss.
