The Damo Bit - 30th March 2010
Posted by Number 2 on March 30 2010 - 13:52:21

With the Easter Holidays almost upon us Damo ponders if there is a new role for the lovable furry mastcots from Super League

Your mascot campaigner Damo is here....

Time to add more dimensions to Super League mascots?

When Disney Land has mascots more famous than our own in super league then surely this is competition. Kids from all over the world want to see these old and waning characters that were created years ago. This is because Mickey Mouse and co been in movies, TV series, books, magazines and newspapers that have entertained the kids for generations.

Something that on a smaller scale can be said for super league mascots. This is only thanks to the sky TV cameras capturing little glimpses of them during live super league games along with that promo for the magic weekends. You can also add that these have appeared in the odd article over the years whenever itís the internet or rugby league express.

However the likes of St Bernard, Ronnie the Rhino and Bull Boy arenít in the same league as Goofy, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Heck even Ronnie the Rhinos antics are second to that of the now legendry mascot Berlino the Bear from the 2009 Athletics World Championships. From being picked up by Polish hammer throw world champion Anita Włodarczyk to racing Usain Bolt around the track after his new 200 metres world record this bear has it all. Although I love Ronnie the Rhinos dancing, community work and picture taken with Frosties. He is obviously small in comparison.

Its doesnít have to be always that way though.

Its time that we tapped into Disney territory with our mascots having a Disney Land of their own. I am talking about a theme park with our rugby league mascots walking around them. Iím talking about TV shows where our Mascots feature in them. Its about time we had a Rugby League land of our own.

A rugby league land would be a fantastic advertisement for our game. In 2003, Europeís top ten theme parks had 40 million visitors. Something that canít be said for the amount of people who visited the top ten European super league grounds any year. With a theme park of our own not only will we generate a lot more money for the game than we already do but introduce many new fans for the first time.

Last of all Iíd like to say that I really enjoyed Ronnie as a kid and still do now for novelty reasons. But what stressed me is weíre not using mascots of the game to their full potential.

Thanks for reading.
